A SOLDIER based in North Yorkshire was killed and five injured by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said today.

The soldier, a member of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers was attached to 5th Regiment Royal Artillery, who are based at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.

He died when the vehicle he was travelling in was hit by a mine strike.

The dead soldier, who is not from the North-East, was pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin have been informed.

The five injured soldiers were taken by helicopter to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) medical centre at Camp Bastion and Kandahar airfield.

No other details concerning their injuries were released.

The Ministry of Defence said the soldiers were disrupting enemy forces and reassuring local Afghans when their patrol vehicle was struck two miles north east of the southern Afghan town of Musa Qala.

Eighty seven British troops have been killed in Afghanistan since the start of operations in November 2001.
