EXHIBITIONS displaying the work of two photographers with North-East connections will go on show in the new year.

Bowes Museum, in Barnard Castle, will display work by Eddie Ryle-Hodges, who worked in Teesdale and London, featuring landscapes, fashion and portraits. He died in 2001.

Mr Ryle-Hodges, who was born in 1939, was introduced to photography by his grandmother, who used it to record her family's life.

In 1969, he became a professional photographer.

He became strongly associated with heavy industry and technology, with clients including British Gas, Blue Circle and Hargreaves.

Assignments for companies such as Shell took him to Kenya, Jamaica and Guyana.

His portrait of Sir Nikolaus Pevsner appeared inside the cover of the renowned Buildings of England series, while his architectural pictures also provided illustrations for the guides.

Emma House, assistant keeper of fine art at the museum, said: "It was quite an honour for his work to be included in the Pevsner guides. We are delighted that his family has agreed to loan these wonderful pictures."

The exhibition will open on Saturday, February 9, and run until May 26.

The museum will also display work by Elijah Yeoman (1849-1930), of Teesdale.

Born in Yorkshire only ten years after the invention of photography, Yeoman forged a name as a portrait and landscape photographer, with shops in several market towns in the North-East.

Ms House said: "Both collections are important records, which capture the essence of their subjects."

The exhibition will also begin on February 9, and will run until Sunday, June 15.

The museum can be contacted on 01833-690606 and at www.the bowesmuseum.org.uk

Entry is £7 for adults, £6 for concessions and free for children under 16.
