AMATEUR musicians have a new way to express their talents thanks to The Cobweb Orchestra.

The group has started an open access network at Middlesbrough Town Hall to encourage musicians to get together and perform - whatever their level of ability.

Rebecca Pedlow, who grew up in Eaglescliffe before going to study music in London, will be conducting the latest group working closely with Andy Jackson, the Creative Director of Cobwebs.

As a youth she played with Cleveland Youth Orchestra under Edwin Raymond, sang in various choirs and toured with the Northern Junior Philharmonic.

She said: "I am really pleased to be involved with helping to set up a Cobwebs Orchestra in Middlesbrough and am looking forward to seeing who comes along and what instruments arrive."

The extensive network of Cobweb musicians grew out of a workshop given in 1995 called 'Blow the Cobwebs of your Music Stand' led by Northern Sinfonia horn player Chris Griffiths.

The event was designed to encourage lapsed players to get their instruments out and make music again.

The Orchestra has an open access policy so there are no auditions are required.

"The Cobweb Orchestra really is for everyone who wants to play music with other people. It does not matter what instrument you play, what standard you think you are, or whether you have played in an orchestra before, you will be made welcome at our sessions," said Mr Jackson.

Laura Hannaway, business development manager at Middlesbrough Town Hall has been key to getting the new group started.

She said: "The orchestra is giving people in the area the opportunity, whatever their level, the chance to join in, learn and have fun with classical music."
