THE new Marks and Spencer Food Hall in Darlington was forced to open its doors a little early as dozens of people queued to get in.

The shop on the town’s West Park estate opened for business the day after the company closed its town centre store.

Early shoppers were keen to see what the Food Hall has to offer and regular customers John and Maureen Day joined manager Cheryl Robson and long-serving M&S worker Linda Chandler to carryout the official ribbon cutting.

Mrs Day said: “Visiting M&S is a big part of our day – picking up some fresh produce and speaking to the team who have become more like friends.

“We were really excited to be part of the opening and help cut the ribbon – we can’t wait to tell our friends and family.”

As well as selling food, the team will be on hand to help locals use the store’s Click & Collect service. This allows customers to shop for the latest Home and Clothing ranges

Store Manager, Cheryl Robson, who brings nearly 20 years’ experience to the role, said: “We’re excited to open our Foodhall to both new customers and familiar faces, marking a new chapter of our history in Darlington, which spans more than 100 years.

“The team has been working so hard to get ready for the opening and the shelves are bursting with everything from lunches to go, to everyday essentials, to dinners perfect for sharing with family and friends.”

Mrs Chandler, who has worked for the company since 1970, was on hand to help with the ribbon cutting.

She said: “The shop has played such a big role in my life so it’s been such an honour to open the new store. I started my career in at M&S Darlington, working in the foodhall, so it’s great to be part of the new store and play a role in its next chapter in the town.”

Customers at the purpose built shop were impressed with their first visit to the new store.

Marjorie Evans, of Darlington, said: “I used to shop in the town centre shop and I think I will continue to come to the new one for food, it’s really nice and open. It’s just a shame that I won’t be able to buy any clothes here unless Im order online.”

And Kevin Henderson said: “I really like it – I can see myself coming here on a weekly basis to pick up food.”
