A PROJECT which uses food to tackle social isolation has received a cash boost.

Staff and volunteers at Woodhouse Close Church and Community Centre, in Bishop Auckland, last week accepted a cheque for £2,000 from Mayor David Fleming after the funds were donated by Tesco through its Bags of Help scheme.

The money will support the centre's lunch club and meals on wheels service, which run on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

For 35 years the lunch club has served up hearty meals at the centre, bringing people together, and the meals on wheels service takes it the homes of those less able to get out. Both are priced at £4 a meal.

Councillor Fleming said: "It was a pleasure to present this magnificent cheque to Woodhouse Close Church and Community Centre on behalf of Tesco. A lot of people will benefit from it."

Volunteers, including a driver with a car, are needed and anyone interested can call Jean or Anne on 01388-450838.
