A FILMMAKER and an engineer have joined forces to plan a documentary about sustainable transport – and will be putting a converted battery-powered vintage motorbike to the test from John o’Groats to Land's End.

Finn Varney and Fred Spaven, from Malton, North Yorkshire, are planning their trip for early October and intend to speak to other firms and individuals who are championing electric vehicles.

Mr Varney said: "Fred does a lot of work restoring racing cars of the1950s and 1960s, but when he came across a 1961 British-built Royal Enfield Bullet he decided to try something different.

"The bike had been shipped out to India to serve a military service, and was repatriated in 2013 when it came into Fred's hands in serious need of restoration. Once he had it in bits he had the idea to convert the vintage petrol Bullet into electric. Then we planned a trip which would test it out – John o'Groats to Land's End."

With a 75 mile range the Charging Bullet will need several recharging breaks, so the pair had to do their research of where they could stop – and then the documentary was born.

Mr Varney added: "Our research soon proved the route was peppered with fellow engineers and inventors: hydrogen car builders, electric super-bike racers and biogas bus boffins, pioneering the sustainable transport technologies for a cleaner future." Twelve batteries fit into the bike’s custom made laser-cut steel subframe. Reclaimed from a broken Nissan Leaf, the lithiumion batteries are ideal for this automotive application.

The Charging Bullet team are running a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign, raising funds to cover journey expenses to make the documentary possible.

Mr Varney added: "We will be showing the film at festivals and hopefully it will get picked up by a television network. It is a really exciting project."
