POLICE have launched an investigation after vandals damaged a community garden at Blackhill Club, Ridely Street, near Consett.

It is believed vandals struck on Thursday night. A large quantity of decking was also stolen from the plot.

Volunteers have been working for several months planting flowers, trees, herbs and building up raised beds.

They have also been planting a wildlife trail for bees, butterflies and birds and creating a planting area so the local community can grow fruit and vegetables.

A spokesman for Durham Police said “This was an incredibly disrespectful act which has forced the club to postpone its opening day.”
