THOUSANDS of people enjoyed a sun-drenched traditional agricultural show over the weekend.
The 165th Sedgefield and District Agricultural Show was held on Saturday on the Robert Brown Show Field, offering a glimpse of rural life blended with a host of family fun activities.
People enjoyed competitions and displays with agricultural classes for horses, ponies and donkeys, vintage tractors, a classic car display, small livestock, horticulture and a Crufts qualifier dog show.
Ian Mason, show chairman, said: “It is a great gathering for the rural community and the communities around Sedgefield. “Lots of people return year after year from a long distance away.
“It is a celebration of country life aimed at families.” Black Truffle, of Ricknall Grange Farm, at Aycliffe, was awarded the rosette for the Interbreed Cattle Champion.
Julie Sedgewick, owner of the 15-month-old limousin cross heffer, said: “It means quite a lot because this is our local show.
It is wonderful that a commercial animal has be named as champion. She is homebred on our farm just a few miles away.
“We have had a good year and to win at our local show is fantastic.” Ten-year-old Matthew Bentley, from Kepwick, near Thirsk, was named as the champion young cattle handler following his display with Stardust.
Steven Kirby, from Northallerton, came first in the interbreed sheep championship category with his pair of pure texel simmer shearlings. Meanwhile, Lignite chickadee won the prizes in the stallion and miniature classes.
Christine Jackson, from Loftus, who owns the ten-year-old min Shetland, said: “I am absolutely over the moon.
“It was a good strong class so it was nice to be chosen. He is a very well behaved stallion but does get a bit excited when the horses are running by, even though he is just a little miniature. I think he fancies his chances.”
As well as the animals people could also enjoy the funfair and a birds of prey centre as well as several marquees with craft stalls, horticultural displays, home produce and handicrafts.
A popular food hall returned offering a range of local and regional delicacies. Ann Sheehan, from Sedgefield, who has been going since she was a little girl, was back this year with her granddaughter, Toni-Leigh, who is nine.
Mrs Sheehan said: “It is one of them things that we come to every year.
“My dad came and we had horses. It has grown over the years and there are different things here that were not here when I was younger. “There is a nice atmosphere, it is a good day out and it brings the community together. We all enjoy it.”
