ILLUSTRATOR Sir Quentin Blake has created a unique drawing for a museum which is hosting an exhibition on one of his most famous works.

The Bowes Museum, in Barnard Castle, is currently hosting The BFG in Pictures exhibition until September 30.

And following a conversation with museum staff, Sir Quentin decided to create a piece of art specifically for their collection.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that Quentin Blake agreed to create this unique drawing, and equally thrilled with the result,” said staff member Amy Bainbridge. “It’s particularly pertinent to The Bowes Museum as it depicts the BFG cradling a swan eating a fish, inspired by the Museum’s life-size Silver Swan automaton.

“The drawing has been framed and is now on display near the entrance to The BFG in Pictures exhibition,” she added. “It’s a wonderful legacy that will become part of our permanent collection for future generations to see.”

Created especially for The Bowes Museum in June 2018, the A3 drawing is on Aquarelle Arches fin watercolour paper, and was produced using pen and ink with a watercolour wash.

The BFG in Pictures is a touring exhibition from House of Illustration in London, the UK’s only public gallery devoted to illustration and graphic arts.
