A GROUP which brings theatre performances to rural communities has swept the board at this year's National Rural Touring Awards.

Winning three out of a possible six awards and beating off competition from across the UK, members of the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme have been celebrating.

The scheme, which tours shows to village halls across County Durham, Cumbria and Northumberland, including 16 village venues in Teesdale and Wear Valley, took the award for Voluntary Promoter of the Year, Best Touring Collaboration and the National Rural Touring Forum's special award for an outstanding contribution to the world of rural touring.

The awards, which were held at Worcester University last month, recognise achievements in the rural touring sector and celebrate the people involved.
