DARLINGTON'S Labour group has selected Cllr Stephen Harker as its new leader.
He will replace Cllr Bill Dixon, who is retiring after seven years as the leader of the group and of Darlington council.
The group selected Cllr Chris McEwan, who was the only other nominee for leader, as the new deputy.
It is expected that Thursday's full meeting of Darlington council, on which Labour has an overall majority, will rubberstamp Cllr Harker as the authority's new leader with Cllr McEwan as his deputy.
Cllr Dixon said: "We have a very strong team to take us into 2019 and I wish them every success."
