THE hot weather finally gave way to thunder and lightning on Monday night, with heavy rain falling in parts of the region.
On Teesside, roads and gardens were flooded during a torrential downpour which was accompanied by a large electrical storm in the skies.

There were also reports of localised power cuts, with a number of areas still without supply.
Northern Powergrid is working to restore power to 80 premises in Houghton-le-Spring by mid-morning, 100 at Langley Park at about 4.30pm this afternoon, 70 in Durham and 140 in Ferryhill at around lunchtime.
Around 70 properties in central Darlington and 110 in the Haughton le Skerne area are still are expected to be reconnected by 10.30am and 12.30pm.
In Redcar around 100 properties should have power restored in little over an hour and 150 properties affected in Middlesbrough by 1pm.
Durham Police last night issued a warning to drivers that the torrential rainfall has caused flash flooding across the county.
A spokesperson said that the force had received reports of problems in areas prone to flooding due to surface run off from fields and verges along with a number of roads in towns due to blocked drains, adding that as the rain stopped most areas had cleared but drivers should still take care.
Part of the A1(M) was affected, with the Highways Agency called out to deal with flooding on the northbound carriageway between Bowburn and Carville.

At around 10pm a number of cars become stuck between Spennymoor and Bishop Auckland after hitting standing water at speed, Tursdale Business Park near Durham was flooded and firefighters had to assist a homeowner in Spennymoor by pumping flood water from the property.
Pallion New Road, in Sunderland, was shut overnight due to a burst water main but Northumbrian Water said was reopened in the early hours of this morning.
