STUNT riders will be wowing spectators with jaw-dropping performances at an annual police event aimed at raising awareness about bikers.

Durham Police’s annual BikeWise event is on Sunday, July 22, at its headquarters at Aykley Heads, in Durham.

This year’s event will feature world record holder Dave Coates, from Darlington, and the 3SIXTY bicycle stunt team, Isle of Man TT legend John McGuiness and the Dick Shepherd motorcycle collection, which includes the original Triumph TR6 Trophy motorcycle used in the Steve McQueen film ‘The Great Escape’.

Chief Constable Mike Barton said: “When I was a lad growing up in Lancashire, it seemed like every Christmas I ended up watching a re-run of The Great Escape. So I was excited to hear that one of the stars of that classic movie is due to make an appearance at this year’s BikeWise.

“Apart from rekindling my childhood memories, the appearance of that famous old motorbike demonstrates how BikeWise has developed over the years.

“When it began 24 years ago, organisers thought Bikewise would appeal mainly to diehard motorcyclists, but it has grown into a fantastic family event which has something for everyone, young and old, biker and non-biker.”

Other entertainment includes displays by Durham’s police dogs, including Kaizer who is retiring after seven years, officers from channel five’s Police Interceptors, live music from Red 5, a classic and custom bike display, police helicopter and the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

Organisers Sergeant Iain Rodgers, who has ridden at Bikewise since 2007, and PC Iain Tribick, will be appearing for the last time.

Mr Barton said: “This year’s show promises to be a lot of fun but, as ever, comes with a serious message. Motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable users on the roads and we still see far too many riders killed or injured each year. Everyone at Durham Constabulary wants to keep people safe on our roads and that’s the message we hope you take away.”

He added: “Enjoy your visit, stay safe on your bikes and try to remember that, unless you’re Steve McQueen, keep both your wheels on the ground.”

The event is on between 10am and 5pm. Entry for adults is £2 and children under 16 go free.

Parking is at County Hall, Sniperly Park & Ride or at Police HQ for motorcycles.
