A GIANT anti-Trump poster has been unfurled in Durham to show the US president Donald Trump how unpopular he is during his visit to the UK.

The poster, on the side of Durham Miners’ Association headquarters at Redhills, was revealed ahead of the 134th Big Meeting, and is so big it is visible from the railway station so will be seen by thousands of visitors.

It was unveiled on Friday to coincide with protests across the country co-ordinated by the protest group Together Against Trump.

The group is planning to take part in Durham Miners’ Gala on Saturday with people meeting outside the Gala Theatre, near the Market Place, from 10am onwards, before joining the procession through the streets at 10.30am.

On Thursday, to mark Trump’s arrival on British soil, a march was held in Newcastle city centre with crowds of people chanting Dump Trump.

A spokesman for Together Against Trump, who led the rally at Grey’s Monument, said: “Most people in this country say Trump is not welcome here.

“We do not welcome Trump. We stand against him.

“We are standing against everything he embodies. That is why we are holding this march and this rally.

“We are marching against Trump, against racism and against the politics of war.

“We are part of a global movement against Trump.”

The president arrived in the UK late on Thursday after a NATO summit in Brussels.

He met Prime Minister Theresa May at Chequers on Friday before meeting the Queen at Windsor Castle amid protests around the country.

Durham City MP Roberta Blackman-Woods tweeted: “Heartily sick that @theresa_may is giving Donald Trump such a welcome.

“Meet him if she must but this pomp is out of place for someone who locks children in cages, starts trade wars, is rolling back action on climate change, is a misogynist with divisive and dangerous policies.”
