ARCHAEOLOGISTS investigating the hidden past of the Victorian mining industry on the North York Moors are offering guided tours to visitors during July.

The site of the excavation, Combs Wood near Beck Hole, Goathland, was once a hive of industrial activity. During the mid-19th century, numerous ironstone mines and their associated buildings dotted the hillside.

However it was short-lived, as landslides buried the mines and problems beset the nearby furnaces at Beck Hole.

Now archaeological methods are being used to find out more about the structures in Combs Wood as part of the Land of Iron project, funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund

The free tours will run at 11am and 2pm from July 3-7 and again from July 10-14. Visit northyorkmoors.org.uk/events for more.
