A GROUP of police officers will be swapping the beat for bikes when they set off on a charity ride this weekend.

They will be cycling 50 miles in support of Alfie John Watson who needs a life-changing operation.

PC Dawn Young from the Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Policing Team will be making the long journey with PC Andy Anderson, PC Chris Swales, PC Tashfeen Majid and PC Tim Nuttall. They will also be joined by Julie Pearce who works in Middlesbrough Council’s Community Safety Team.

The cyclists are supporting Stockton youngster Alfie – who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and spasticity in his lower limbs.

The five-year-old's family have been advised that he would benefit from a spinal operation and are aiming to raise around £35k for his healthcare.

The cyclists will be setting off from Cleveland Police’s HQ, Ladgate Lane, Middlesbrough, on Sunday June 24.

They’ll pedal to Roots farm shop in East Rounton where Alfie will meet them and wish them well for the rest of their journey. The officers will then be completing a route around North Yorkshire before cycling back to the Police HQ.

PC Young said: “We wanted to support this fantastic local cause and make a difference to Alfie and his family.

“We’ve also had a dress down day and run a tuck shop to raise money towards Alfie’s appeal.

“More than £400 has been raised so far and we hope to add to that total with sponsorship for our ride, as well as raising awareness of what Alfie’s family need.”

Alfie’s mum Katie said: “We want to say thank you to everyone taking part, every donation helps as we have a long way to go to reach our target.”
