FROM Viking reenactments to thrilling show rides and a full parade, thousands of people flocked to a market town for its annual meet weekend.

There was fun for all the family at the Barnard Castle Meet, which kicked off with a fun run and boat race on the River Tees on Saturday.

On Sunday, residents and visitors were entertained with a pet show and family sports day on the Lower Demesnes which saw hundreds of families enjoy live music, donkey rides and demonstrations from Viking re-enactors.

But it was yesterday that proved the show stopper for the whole weekend as people lined the main street to watch the annual parade.

A sea of young and old alike in colourful outfits packed the streets with several schools, charities and other organisations taking part.

A fire engine and Spennymoor Town Band led the parade while several colourful floats and classic cars followed.

Visitors were soaked with water guns by children from the Barnard Castle Football Club as they passed on their World Cup-inspired float while other highlights included an appearance from Willy Wonka and FISHDANCE! a community dance and music project to celebrate The Bowes Museum's 125th anniversary.

Visitors were also keeping an eye out for the carnival queen, Gladys Sparks.

Unfortunately the 99-year-old was too unwell to attend but did see off her great-granddaughters and great-great-grandchildren, who represented her in a horse-drawn carriage.

The carriage was adorned with pictures of Mrs Sparks in her former parade roles including Lady Godiva.

Her granddaughter, Sue Shuttleworth, said her grandmother wished her attendants well and still enjoyed seeing the parade wearing her tiara and cape.

Shona Robinson, of the meet committee, said the whole weekend had been "absolutely out of this world and awesome".
