A COMMUNITY came together to remember a football player who was idolised by a generation of fans.

A memorial to former Crook Town Amateur Football Club star Jimmy McMillan was held in St Catherine’s Church in Crook on Saturday.

Mr McMillan made history in the 1950s when he won four FA Amateur Cup Winners Medals with the club.

Mr McMillan died last year and his funeral was held near his home in Kibblesworth in Tyneside. Unfortunately, many people in Crook were unable to go, prompting football fan Harold Stephenson to organise a special service of remembrance in the town, with several footballers who played alongside Mr McMillan attending.

Mr Stephenson said: “It was a very nice service by the Reverend Vince Fenton. Michael Manuel our local football historian gave the eulogy on Jimmys football career. After the service we had a nice buffet. Everyone was talking to each while having a cuppa and reflecting on Jimmy’s great football career.”
