FOUR girls have been chosen to perform the traditional role of leading the parade ahead of a County Durham town's medieval celebration.

Sophie Green has been crowned this year's flower queen for Sedgefield Medieval Fair, which returns to the town for the 48th time on Saturday, May 19.

The eight-year-old will be joined by her attendants and fellow Sedgefield Hardwick Primary School pupils Georgie Luke, five, and Amelia Taylor, seven, as well as nine-year-old Evie Legender, of Sedgefield Primary School.

Selected in a raffle, the girls will ride in the carriage at the front of the parade at 10am.

The festival will follow across the town green and Ceddesfeld Hall until around 3.30pm

Maxine Robinson, of Sedgefield Community Association, said: "It's always a good start to the fair and the kids are absolutely delighted to be a part of it."

This year's parade will feature around 200 primary school pupils who will follow a red, white and blue theme in honour of the royal wedding and the tie between the UK and the United States.

The fair will also play host the usual offerings, including medieval combat and living history displays, a falconry display, morris dancers and refreshments.
