PEOPLE can get a close-up view of the ongoing multi-million pound restoration of Auckland Castle– in person or from the comfort of their own homes.

As major conservation work continues at the 900-year-old castle, a new behind the scenes film by The Auckland Project gives an insight into the work and the historic significance of the Castle’s former residents.

Volunteer tour leader Lydia Nicholson outlines the unique powers and remarkable histories of the Prince Bishops of Durham, from within their former private palace.

She also talks about the building’s remarkable architecture, art and some of its former famous guests from royalty to writers.

The Castle is currently benefitting from a major conservation programme by The Auckland Project.

It has been closed to the public since work began in September 2016 and the films offer an opportunity to take a look inside as work continues.

The conservation work is being carried out by Gateshead-based company, Meldrum Construction Ltd which will hand Auckland Castle back to The Auckland Project in July.

Work will then move on to restoring the castle’s interior to its former Georgian Gothic splendour and preparing interpretation for visitors.

Mrs Nicholson said: “The future for Auckland Castle is going to be absolutely amazing.”

It will then reopen on Saturday, December 1.

For a closer look at the conservation work people can attend free behind the scenes tours this weekend, between 10am and 3pm on both days.

Guides will lead visitors to site of the Scotland Wing archaeological dig, which will be home to the new Faith Museum, and then on to the Bishop’s Library where they can look down into the medieval kitchen and see recent discoveries dating back to the Tudor period.

The Auckland Project will have stalls and activities during Bishop Auckland Food Festival this weekend, including a gardening stall where visitors can sow their own vegetable seeds, free cake samples from its catering apprentices and storytelling sessions and a craft market at No42. Many of the activities are free and booking is not required.

Further behind the scenes tours at Auckland Castle will take place on Saturday, May 26 and Saturday, June 23.
