SUPPORTERS of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary yesterday.

The former England footballer and manager launched the Foundation in 2008 to raise £500,000 but it has gone on to raise more than £12million.

Lady Elsie and son, Mark Robson, said when Sir Bobby died a year-and-a-half after launching the Foundation they thought it might fade but kept going anyway.

Speaking to fundraisers at a party in Newcastle, Mr Robson said: “I wish Dad was here today. He would be enormously proud of our fundraisers.

"To help the people that we do, people affected by cancer, it’s heartwarming.

“Here we are, ten years on and we’ve reached £12million and that’s only because of the fantastic support we’re so lucky to receive."

Over the last decade, the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation has funded cutting-edge cancer treatment and support services for patients from across the North East and Cumbria. It also plays a key role in international efforts against the disease.

Mr Robson added: “It’s incredible and it’s all thanks to our fundraisers. I’m sad that he’s not here but he’s left a wonderful legacy and that makes me proud.”

As a fund within the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Charity, the Foundation relies on volunteer fundraisers and public generosity.
