A PRIMARY school’s Sport Relief challenge has inspired not just pupils but also their families to get active.

That’s after staff at Toft Hill Primary School, near Bishop Auckland, launched a Morning Mile club for Sport Relief week, making use of their new all-weather outdoor track.

Children, along with their parents and grandparents were encouraged to complete laps of the track each day before school and pupils deposited tokens for their house team into a box for every lap completed.

The children were working hard to get in their final laps done on Friday morning as they celebrated Sport Relief by wearing their own sportswear and donating £1 to the charity.

Year 6 teacher, Marc Sproat, said there had been fierce but friendly competition between the three house teams and it had been so successful that the school have now decided to make it a regular activity every Friday, from 8.30am.

Mr Sproat said: “One of the reasons we got the track was to try to encourage them to do the daily mile which was hard on our school field in the winter so it’s having a big impact.

“It has been so successful; we have had hundreds of people using it and everyone has enjoyed it. It’s also promoted healthy life skills and some of them were charging round.”
