AN MP is calling on the local authority to rethink plans to close a village primary school.
Durham County Council is consulting on proposals to close the school site in Sherburn Hill and send pupils to Sherburn Village.
The two schools amalgamated in 2015 and pupils have continued to be educated on both sites. However, the council says it no longer believes running Sherburn Village School over two sites is in the best interests of its pupils.
Durham MP Roberta Blackman-Woods, who hosted a meeting for residents on Thursday, said: βIt was clear from the meeting that there is a huge desire in Sherburn Hill to build community facilities back up.
"It is so important to people living in Sherburn Hill to retain a school site in their community, and I fully support their campaign.
She added: βI intend to meet with Durham County Council again to pass on the concerns that were raised at the meeting, and ask them to look at other options to save this site from closure.β
