A LANDMARK building with a connection to a comedy legend is up for sale in a County Durham town.

St Peter’s Church, on Princes Street, in Bishop Auckland, has gone on the market for £295,000.

Built in 1875, the Grade II-listed building’s claim to fame is that it played host to the baptism of Stan Laurel.

Now it is being marketed by Hunters, an estate agent in Bishop Auckland, as an opportunity to developers.

The advert states: “Suitable for a range of alternate uses, this property has the potential to be developed into a six bedroomed residential dwelling, with previous approved plans and consent.

“St Peter’s Church it was completed in 1875 and has a beautiful yet simple, architectural style.”

The adjoining Church Hall is also available for sale at £110,000 through the agent.

It too offers its own development opportunities and “positive features”.

Previous planning applications have been accepted for converting the Grade II-listed building into two three-bedroom apartments.
