SCHOOLS across the North-East will be closed today as snow causes havoc across the North-East.

A primary school near Darlington will be closed today because of problems with its boiler.

St George's Primary Academy, in Middleton St George, said it had no heating or hot water and would have to stay closed today.

The school has confirmed it will reopen tomorrow (Tuesday, December 12).

Whitcliff School in Carlin How, east Cleveland, was also closed within the last couple of hours due to a failure in their water system. Parents have been advised adn the majority of children have already been collected, a spokesman for Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council said.

St Peter’s Catholic Voluntary Academy on Normanby Road in South Bank, Middlesbrough will also be closed to Years Seven and Eight due to heating issues.

In a letter to parents, Kim Hall, headteacher at the school, said: "The academy will be closed tomorrow to Years Seven and Eight due to heating issues in one area of the school building.

"These issues have been ongoing this term following the installation of a new boiler in the summer which has put pressure on pipe work in some areas of the building.

"As we put students learning at the heart of all decisions we make, this decision is a last resort  and has not been taken lightly.  

"In order to avoid compromising the progress of GCSE classes, the academy will remain open for KS4 , Years 9, 10 & 11. Full punctual attendance is expected from those year groups.

"If you are unable to make suitable childcare arrangements for your child in year 7 or 8, please send them to school and we will provide supervision. 

"We will update you further as soon as possible. Apologies for any inconvenience caused."
