AN Italian restaurant has been granted permission to serve alcohol until 1am despite objections that it would disturb residents in nearby care homes.
Il Palazzo, on Galgate in Barnard Castle, was granted the extension to its opening hours on Friday and Saturday evenings during a meeting of Durham County Council’s Statutory Licensing Sub-Committee yesterday.
Barnard Castle Town Clerk, Michael King, said the extension would unreasonably inconvenience local residents because of the proximity to three residential care homes.
However Il Palazzo’s assistant manager, Petra MacDonald, said: “We don’t feel that there would be a disturbance caused by extended hours or customers leaving later than 11pm which is what the current licence stipulates.
“It is true that we are in the vicinity of the care homes but to date we have never had any complaints, our customers are mature and always leave quietly.”
