A DRESS historian transported people back in time in aid of the Royal British Legion on Tuesday.

Living history group World War II Operations hosted an event with Lucy Adlington, of the History Wardrobe, as she explored the world of fashion, fabrics, hats and home sewing in the 1940s with her new novel, The Red Ribbon, which was inspired by the story of the dressmakers in Auschwitz.

The event, held at St Mary's Parish Church, in Barnard Castle, raised £169.83 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Drinks and canapes were also served at the beginning of the night with an opportunity to browse the display of 1940s fashions and accessories while a bookstall hosted by Castle Hill Books, in Richmond, and a range of RBL poppy items available were available.

The event was presented in association with Barnard Castle 1940s Weekend and many guests came dressed in their favourite 1940s-style clothes.

Organiser, Iris Hillery, said everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. The Red Ribbon is published in paperback at £7.99 and hardback at £10.99.
