AN open-air swimming pool, badly hit by the torrential rain so far experienced this summer, is launching canoeing courses in a bid to increase attendances.
The courses, run by qualified kayak instructor Will Coulson, will start at Stanhope pool, in Weardale, next Thursday.
Volunteers who run the pool, where attendances have fallen to only a handful a day because of the wet weather, are hoping the "canoe school" will prove an attraction to children during the school holidays.
They are also hoping the weather will improve and schoolchidren and their parents will make as much use of the facilities at the pool during the holidays as they have in previous years.
The half-hour training sessions will be held every Thursday, starting at 7.30pm, and will cost £3.50, which includes equipment.
