A BRIDE walked down the aisle to a six-year-old groom during a mock wedding at a primary school.

Susie Benson, also aged six, was "married" to Luca Bloomfield during the Browney Primary School ceremony, held as part of the school's religious education (RE) programme.

The bride, groom and bridesmaids wore specially-adapted costumes for the service, led by a priest from St John's Church, in Langley Moor.

About 40 pupils, aged four to six, took part in the event. School caretaker Thelma Teggart provided a wedding cake and made arrangements for the service.

Teacher Sarah Templeman said: "As part of our RE work, we've been looking at special occasions and relationships and we felt a wedding would fit perfectly and we could teach about the values of marriage.

"It was lovely, very special for the children - very emotional."

The school has received an Ofsted inspectors' report which described it as a "good and improving school which succeeds exceptionally well in promoting the principle that every child matters, in a lively, stimulating and inspiring learning environment".

Headteacher Roslyn Parker said: "Our Ofsted report clearly highlights the enthusiasm, dedication and hard work of the staff, pupils and governors and we are all very proud."
