A DOMESTIC violence worker is bound for Romania to help orphans.

Angela Bell, 39, will spend three weeks in Tirgu Mures, in the Transylvanian Alps, on a mission to help girls aged three to 16.

Ms Bell, who works for North-East charity Norcare, runs Terentia House, near Durham City, a safe haven for women who have been victims of domestic violence, and their families .

She is part of a three-member team from Sunderland-based charity Aid For Romanian Orphanages that will teach the youngsters skills while doing vital repairs to the chateau which houses the orphanage.

Ms Bell said: "This is something I have always wanted to do. When I was younger, I didn't get the chance to do it.

"When this opportunity arose, I had to think long and hard about it as I have a full-time job and family commitments, but it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me."

The former nanny has gained experience working with vulnerable people during her time with Norcare.

Her work at Terentia House includes giving support to children of all ages who come with their mothers to the domestic violence refuge. She will use those skills to help the children she will meet in Romania.

To support the work of the orphanage, cheques made out to Aid for Romanian Orphanages can be sent to the charity at 44 Mowbray Road, Sunderland SR28E
