A CHURCH hall covered in thousands of handmade poppies will provide a fitting venue for a remembrance service on Sunday.

One hundred years after the Battle of Passchendaele, residents of West Cornforth, Ferryhill, County Durham and beyond will come together to remember those who lost their lives.

More than eight months ago the congregations of Holy Trinity Church in West Cornforth and St Luke’s Church in Ferryhill teamed up to create a tribute to the fallen of the First World War. They set out to make 7,117 woollen poppies to represent County Durham soldiers killed in the conflict. But it was not long before the wider community got involved and contributions were flooding in from all over the world.

Earlier this month, the Field of Poppies display, featuring 19,240 handcrafted poppies, was unveiled at West Cornforth Church Hall.

Each poppy represents a British life lost on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

At 7pm on Sunday, a service will be held at the hall, and the display will be floodlit. Piper Steve Wright will also perform. All are welcome.
