HEROIN with a street value of more than £1m and £100,000 in cash have been seized in a raid on a house.

Officers in Middlesbrough said it was their biggest haul of the class A drug and that the operation will have caused dealers major disruption.

The stash was discovered on Tuesday, but was only revealed by police yesterday.

Officers from Middlesbrough District Drugs Unit, supported by a specialist search team, made the find in a house in Oxford Road, in the Whinney Banks area.

Detective Inspector Mel Ashley said: "It is the biggest recovery we have had in Middlesbrough and means we have deprived the dealers in this area of making a substantial amount of money from dealing in drugs."

Two men were arrested in connection with the find, one charged with possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, the other bailed pending inquiries.

Police continued searching the house yesterday. A second house in Middlesbrough was also searched and a quantity of heroin recovered. A man is being questioned following the second raid.

Acting Superintendent Shane Sellers said: "Over the past 12 months, Middlesbrough police, with support from partner agencies, have systematically dismantled a number of networks dealing in drugs through numerous arrests and substantial drug seizures.

"These successes can be seen through the recent Sabre Operations that have supported the force's objective of robustly tackling drug-related crime, and also resulted in the closure of a number of cannabis farms.

"My message to the people who are intent on dealing drugs in Middlesbrough is simple. Do not come to Middlesbrough. You will be caught, you will be convicted and we will take your ill-gotten assets from you."

Raja Arshad, 25, of Oxford Road, Middlesbrough, appeared before Teesside magistrates charged with possessing heroin with intent to supply, possessing crack cocaine with intent to supply and concealment of criminal proceeds. He did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody until next Thursday.
