LABOUR has held the safe seat of Sedgefield with a majority of more than 6,000.
The result was announced at 1.01am today.
The party's candidate Phil Wilson, from Trimdon, received 12,528 votes.
Tony Blair had represented the constituency since 1983 until he retired after ten years as Prime Minister three weeks ago, triggering the by-election.
