THE funeral of former Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd is due to be held on Saturday.

The businessman, who was a pivotal figure at St James’ Park during the 1990s, died on Monday, September 25, aged 76.

His funeral will be held at St George’s Church, in Jesmond, Newcastle.

It starts at 12 noon and the Shepherd family says it hopes there will be space inside the church for members of the public wishing to attend.

Any spare seating will be granted on a first come, first served basis.

Those members of the public unable to enter the church will be able to listen to the service outside, where it will be broadcast via loudspeaker.

There will be a private cremation service after the funeral.

Only family flowers are requested at the church but donations in memory of Freddy would be gratefully received at St George’s Church for The Road to Recovery Trust.
