VISITORS to a museum event this weekend will get to see two VIP locomotives.
The Flying Scotsman will be at the annual steam gala at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon, on Saturday and Sunday.
The 1923-built A1 was named after the London to Edinburgh rail service and in 1934 became the first locomotive in the UK to reach 100mph. In 2004, the National Railway Museum bought it for the national collection.
It will be joined at the gala by guest locomotive BR Standard Class 2MT No 78018 – made famous in the film Snowdrift at Bleath Gill and restored by Darlington Railway Preservation Society.
Passenger rides will run on the museum’s demonstration line, behind Furness Railway No 20 both mornings and The Flying Scotsman in the afternoon. Visitors can go in the cab of Locomotive 78018 which will be static but in steam.
Entry free but charges apply for passenger services.
