RESIDENTS in Crook are being encouraged to become local heroes after a new environmental initiative was launched.
A superhero-themed day was put on by Groundwork North East & Cumbria at the Glenholme Centre, in Crook, yesterday.
Children and their families - complete in superhero fancy dress - took part in the free activities including making crafts from recycled materials and a litter pick competition.
Participants also had the chance to nominate ‘grot spot’ areas which need a bit of attention and to sign up to be a ‘local hero' through the new project which has been funded by the 3 Towns Area Action Partnership.
It aims to encourage the community to look after the area with voluntarily 'heroes' being tasked with tackling grot spot areas and raising awareness of environmental issues.
Groundwork's project officers, Karen Collins and Esther Gray were delivering the activities around the upcycling theme and said they are also preparing to host craft events, litter picks and deliver 'Waste to the Rescue' workshops in surrounding schools.
As part of the workshops, pupils will be able to create their own superhero costumes out of waste and recycled materials.
Ms Collins said: "We are trying to get people to reduce their waste and sign up to be community champions."
