A CAR overturned on the northbound A1 this morning near Scotch Corner.

The black Vauxhall Zafira ended up on its side after colliding with a beige Citroen Xsara, close to the Barton junction 56, about a mile north of Scotch Corner, at 9.10am.

Two people were taken to hospital for checks but were not thought to be seriously injured.

Traffic built up following the accident and the sliproad at Barton was closed off while the overturned car was recovered.

The scene was clear by 10.30am, North Yorkshire Police said.

Numerous police officers and ambulance crews were called to the scene of the incident.

A witness reported: "A car could be seen to be on its side, but it was unclear whether there were any other vehicles that had been involved in the incident.

"Traffic has built up behind the incident and it could cause quite a few people delays as emergency services work at the scene."
