THE music and fashions of the 1970s enjoyed a comeback at open air variety show yesterday.

Innovations, which runs day care centres for adults with learning disabilities across County Durham and Sunderland, hosted its annual music festival at Shildon-Sunnydale Leisure Centre.

More than 200 people who attend the centres performed a series of acts, including singing, dancing, magic and comedy.

The theme was the 1970s and audiences enjoyed renditions of popular hits by the likes of the Bay City Rollers, Abba, Queen and The Nolan Sisters.

Hazel Kennedy, a development officer at Innovations in Bishop Auckland, said: “It was fantastic and wonderful to see everyone singing along, dancing and tapping their feet. They really got involved which helped create a fantastic atmosphere.

“Everyone has been rehearsing for this and when they first heard about the show they were so excited. They really enjoy music and they were very proud of themselves.

“We were very lucky with the weather too. The heavens opened just as we started packing up. ”

Innovations aims to help people with learning disabilities achieve a more independent and worthwhile quality of life, empowering them to accept their right to social inclusion.
