A BESPOKE lighting scheme and other repairs expected to cost about £100,000 have been recommended in a bid to protect a County Durham market town’s ancient landmark.
A special survey was carried out on the Market Cross, in Barnard Castle, after concerns were raised about HGVs damaging the structure, which acts as a roundabout in the town.
The survey was completed by Lewis Surveying Associates, in May, after being commissioned jointly by the Teesdale Action Partnership (TAP), Durham County Council and Barnard Castle Town Council.
Chris Myers, who presented the key findings on behalf of the council at the latest TAP board meeting, said the Grade I listed building is in “good condition” but does need £77,000 worth of repairs in the next two years to deal with stone erosion and condensation problems.
A new lighting scheme is also expected to cost £17,650.
Mr Myers said the council hoped to start work on the building by the end of the financial year and be finished for summer 2019.
