A FORMER soldier who last saw service more than 50 years ago has rejoined the colours.

Bryan Cockburn served with The Green Howards between 1954 and 1956 during his National Service and was posted to Cyprus for what he describes as "the best two years of my life".

Now he has rejoined the regiment - but this time as a volunteer working at the regimental museum in Richmond.

Mr Cockburn is a well-known figure in Bedale from his 46 years of working in the butcher's shop now run by his son.

He saw an appeal for volunteers at the museum and decided to put his name forward.

After a brief period of training, he now acts as "Front of House" each Friday - welcoming visitors, taking admission fees and running the shop, as well as answering their questions.

"You meet a lot of very interesting people," he said.

"Some of them know a lot more than I do, but it's fascinating to talk to them.

Working in the museum is absolutely brilliant and the museum itself is fascinating. There is something for everyone, whether you're from a military background or not."

Curator David Tetlow said: "The work that our volunteers undertake is invaluable. They cover a very wide variety of tasks, from guiding groups around the displays to research and, like Bryan, welcoming our visitors.

"We always welcome new volunteers.

You don't have to have served with The Green Howards to help us in our task of preserving and presenting the history of this historic regiment."
