COMMUTERS will have their routine trip brightened up thanks to a comical installation created by youngsters.

Passengers boarding the train at Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, can now enjoy interactive artwork and posters designed to make rail users laugh.

Pupils across all years of the town's Greenfield Community College site worked with Greenfield Arts on the Bringing the Funny Project which saw them research the formula for triggering a chuckle.

David Priestley, executive headteacher for the school, said: "It's important young people are able to make a difference in the community.

"This whole project is about helping the community and and helping them see things differently.

"They are taking some responsibility for their own community and shaping the way people behave."

Schoolchildren took influence from workshops with comedian Ruth Johnson to create visual images with designer Nicola Golightly which are displayed along the platform.

They also worked with members of the arts hub's adult Cree team to create an interactive piece complete with sound and light which is located within the platform shelter.
