A CAMPAIGN to improve an often-forgotten aspect of home safety has been extended.

Building on its successful Sheducate initiative, Hambleton Community Safety Partnership is now selling halfprice shed alarms.

Earlier this year, the partnership circulated information packs about shed safety through garden centres and DIY stores in Northallerton, Thirsk, Leeming Bar, Stokesley and Easingwold.

But with break-ins still on the increase, it has decided tougher action is needed.

In the past two years there were almost 400 burglaries in the district involving sheds, garages and outbuildings. But by the end of February this year there had already been 55 break-ins - a 70 per cent rise.

"Hambleton - like most other rural regions - suffers from this type of crime," said crime and disorder manager Chris Fields.

"Recorded crime figures show that thieves are far more likely to break into sheds and garages than houses.

"It is vital we make it difficult for the criminal - and keeping them off our property need not be hard or expensive."

The Solon shed alarms - which are only available to residents of Hambleton - are £7, less than half the recommended retail price of £14.95.

They are available from council offices in Northallerton, Stokesley and Easingwold. Hambleton residents must bring proof of residence, such as a utility bill or driving licence, with them.
