HUNDREDS of people enjoyed a weekend of celebrations to mark a major milestone at a community leisure centre.

SLAM Community Development Trust organised a three-day programme of events to mark its tenth anniversary at the Spectrum Leisure Centre.

Highlights included a gin-tasting session, beer festival and family fun day complete with bouncy castle, face painter and balloon modeller.

There was also a chance to try out exercise classes such as spinning, yoga and boot camp for free.

Ian Hirst, chief executive of SLAM, said: “It was a great weekend with hundreds of people joining in the fun. For us, it provided an opportunity to show off what we do. The Spectrum is not just a place for sport, although that is a big part of it. It is very much a community venue and a place to get together to socialise and celebrate.”

On Friday, the trust gave a presentation in which it shared some of its plans for the future. This included an announcement about a new ten year partnership with Life Fitness and Hammer Strength to provide gym equipment.

Mr Hirst said: “This is really exciting for us as it means our gym equipment will get updated every four to five years. This is something larger organisations such as local authorities have already done but it’s a big step for a smaller leisure trust like ours. It’s fantastic to be in a strong enough position to make that commitment.”
