A MAN remains in police custody in connection with the suspected murder of Darlington man Michael Lawson.

The 34-year-old suffered a fatal stab wound following a fight in the early hours of Saturday morning.

This afternoon the man leading the investigation, Detective Chief Superintendent Adrian Green, appealed for a motorist who witnessed the attack to come forward and reassured local residents that the killing is not connected to any ongoing dispute in the town.

One of the two men arrested in connection with the alleged murder has been cleared of any involvement in the incident and has been released without charge.

A second man remains in custody and is being interviewed by murder squad detectives.

DCS Green said: “Michael Lawson suffered a single stab wound to the chest during an incident on Geneva Road. He was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital by a passer-by but sadly died while in hospital.

“Two men were arrested by armed officers and one remains in custody. Police officers are still in the area carrying out forensic examinations and searches.

“I’m appealing for any information from members of the public in relation to what the saw at the scene but in particular, I have released CCTV footage of a white saloon car that was driven down Geneva Road from the Neasham Road roundabout as the incident was occurring.

“From the way the car braked it is obvious that they have seen something but they may not realise the significance of what they saw ¬- at the time, it may have looked like a scuffle but we now know this was the moment Michael was stabbed.

“If you are the driver or recognise this white vehicle, we would urge you to please get in touch.”

In a statement, Mr Lawson’s family said: “We cannot put into words the pain we are feeling from this needless tragic loss.

“Michael was an inspiration to us all, so full of life while caring for others, he was a son, grandson and dad who touched the hearts of all who knew him.”
