A TOWN will pay tribute to brave servicemen who died when their planes crashed over the area on Friday.

Teesdale Aviation Day was traditionally held on the first Wednesday of July but, after the aviation memorial was moved from Deerbolt Prison to Barnard Castle’s Garden of Remembrance last year, organisers changed the date to avoid a clash with the town’s market.

This year’s service will commence at 11am today in the Galgate Memorial Gardens.

The Vintage Pipers will be in attendance from 10.30am, prior to an opening introduction at 10.58am by Tony Galley, one of the co-founders.

The Service of Commemoration will be led by Reverend Canon Alec Harding and include a wreath-laying ceremony where the Town Mayor, Councillor Sandra Moorhouse, and representatives from RAF Leeming, The Royal Air Forces Association, Barnard Castle School Cadet Force and, co-founder, John Yarker will lay wreaths.

The service will conclude following the raising of the Standards and Last Reveille and the Piper’s Laments.

Refreshments will be provided by the Andalucía Cafe following the service.
