A MOTORCYCLIST was airlifted to hospital after suffering a broken back when he was thrown from his bike after a crash with a car.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the accident, which happened on Wednesday evening on the A1086 Coast Road, at Blackhall Rocks, near Peterlee.

Just before 6.30pm, the driver of a blue VW Beetle, which was travelling east along the road, collided with a Kawasaki motorbike which was travelling in the opposite direction.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and suffered serious injuries, including a broken back.

“He was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, where police said he remains in a stable condition”.

The spokesman added: “The driver of the car sustained minor injuries in the accident”.
