A NEW town mayor says he is honoured to take on the role and is looking forward to following in his father’s footsteps.

Ferryhill Town Councillor John Lindsay was elected mayor for 2017/18 at the town council’s annual meeting on Wednesday, May 17.

Former town mayor Cllr Ken Campbell was elected Deputy Mayor.

Cllr Lindsay said: “I’m honoured to have been nominated and elected by my fellow councillors to the position of mayor.

“I hope to work with all councillors regardless of party or group affiliations for the good of this community that we have all been elected to serve.”

He added: “My dad worked very hard for this town during his term of office from 1960 to 1961, and I shall do the same.

“This coming year will be hard work but it is a privilege to serve the community in this way and I shall do my very best.

“I’m looking forward to meeting friends, old and new, from around County Durham during my time as Mayor”.

The mayor will hold charity events throughout the year and is now deciding which charities to support.
