A GENEROUS donation will allow actors to unwind ahead of performances at Darlington’s historic theatre.

The transformation of the former Darlington Civic – now the Hippodrome – has received a £20,000 funding boost.

The donation, from the Friends of Darlington Hippodrome, will fund the creation of a new green room.

In show business, green rooms provide a relaxing space for performers and members of visiting companies, functioning as a backstage waiting room and lounge before, after and during a performance.

Rodney Burges, secretary of the Friends group, said: “The theatre has long had a reputation among actors as being a wonderful theatre to perform in because of the welcoming staff and Friends.

“We have continuously provided fresh fruit in the dressing rooms and put on regular opening night receptions for visiting companies.”

He added: “With the restoration providing more space behind the scenes and in particular this much needed relaxation area, the Friends were proud to make this substantial donation to the restoration fund to be sole sponsors of the green room and thereby further enhance the future reputation of the Darlington Hippodrome.”

The multi-million pound restoration of the theatre is on course to be completed by November, with pantomime Snow White and the Seven Dwarves expected to be the first show to take to the stage in the revamped venue.

The £11.7m transformation will see 21st century facilities fitted while the theatre’s Edwardian glamour is preserved.

As part of the 18-month project, a lift and more than 1,000 additional seats will be installed, making the theatre more accessible and ensuring larger audiences can be properly accommodated.

Sean McNichols, operations manager for construction company Willmott Dixon, said: “The project has been full of hidden challenges and gems that we keep uncovering.

“It’s important to try and preserve what we can and make use of anything we come across by incorporating it into our plans.”

The Friends of Darlington Hippodrome is an independently run group of supporters who enjoy benefits such as discounted tickets, advance notice of shows and post-show receptions with performers.

Membership is £15 a year for individuals or £25 for double memberships. For more information, email rodneyburges@btinternet.com.
