AN 18-year-old woman is fighting for her life after a brutal attack in the early hours.
Cleveland Police said it received a call from a member of the public in Marton Road, Middlesbrough, at around 3am on Saturday, where the woman had been subjected to a serious assault.
It remains unclear which section of the A172 Marton Road - which runs from Ladgate Lane to Clairville Road - the woman was attacked.
She was taken to the nearby James Cook University Hospital with significant injuries and she remains in a critical condition.
A 21-year-old man is in custody in connection with the assault and detectives have launched a major investigation into circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police are appealing for witnesses with any information in connection with the incident or anyone with CCTV of the area around that time to get in touch with Detective Chief Inspector Helen Barker at Cleveland Police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
