CALLS for a big shake-up in dealing with traffic at Helmsley, one of Yorkshire’s most popular tourist centres, have been made by a senior local councillor who has warned of gridlock this summer.

Cllr Chris Parkin said an urgent review was needed of traffic management, adding “accidents are waiting to happen.”

Because of the beauty spot town’s success vehicles were being parked “inappropriately” at junctions resulting in emergency vehicles struggling to find a way through, he said.

Coun Parkin highlighted three blackspots on the edge of the town - the junction with Rievaulx on the B1257; and two on the A170, at Wombleton and Welburn.

“Helmsley is in danger of being deadlocked all for the sake of yellow lines, inexpensive signage and a will to resolve what is becoming a major issue in the town.”
